Sacramento Hunger Commission: May 2005 Minutes
- Meeting called to order by Steve Caruso, Chair.
- February and March meeting minutes approved.
- Nancy McGagin, Raley's Food For Families
- Nancy McGagin is the director of the Food For Families program. The FFF program is an in-house charitable organization that was started in 1986. Since its humble beginnings it has grown tremendously and become a nonprofit; its sole purpose is to promote and encourage contributions from customers and staff in order to give back to the local community. This is how it works: At every check stand at over 130 Raley's/Belair stores (42 in the Sacramento area) there is a cash collection box. Once a day these boxes are emptied out and a monthly statement is released to food banks to let them know how much they can spend. Currently Food For Families partners with 73 Food Banks, which are allowed to spend the money to buy food at wholesale cost. Raley's finds many different ways to get contributions and absorbs all administrative expenses. They have topped 1 million dollars already and over 500,000 pounds of food this season!
- Sacramento Hunger Commission Hope Awards Update
- The Hope Awards are now called the Sacramento Hunger Commission Hope Awards. This year the SHC Hope Awards will be held at the Sacramento State University Ballroom on November 16 from 6:30 to 9pm. Tickets will be $30.00. Robert Egger will be the guest speaker. He is the founder of D.C. Central Kitchen. The Sac State Jazz quartet will perform during the first hour and dinner. The SHC Hope Awards committee is trying to get local food to be served and is working with Sac State catering.
- The nomination process has changed. Instead of opening up SHC Hope Award nominations to the public, commissioners will be responsible to go out and find nominees. The committee is still working on specific criteria for Hope Award nominees. We are also limiting the number of SHC Hope Awards to 5 or 6. The SHC is also working on its own certificate to give out at the SHC Hope Awards, as well as certificates from the local, state and national government level. Suggestions or ideas please email or call Danielle.
- Programs and Planning work group update (mapping project)
- This committee is in the process of creating a map that will eventually show where all the food resources are in Sacramento, ranging from Farmers' Markets to neighborhood food stores to emergency food sites. With time the map will become much larger. An intern from Sacramento City College will be starting some of the mapping at the beginning of the summer. If you are interested in reviewing committee notes or being on its email list please contact Cindy Nelson.
- Fund Development (calendar idea)
- The calendar is a fundraising idea. One idea is for it to be called "Sacramento Heroes Against Hunger". The calendar would serve three main purposes: 1) to raise money for the SHC; 2) generate positive publicity for the SHC; and 3) educate people that hunger isn't always about food. Other ideas are coupons that would be included, or a coupon book that could be created instead of the calendar. It was noted that fundraising through calendars can be competitive. Another suggestion was to get a few chosen restaurants to donate 25% of what they make in one night, which could generate a lot of money. The fund development idea, whatever it ends up being, should tie in with the 22 ACRES. If you have any ideas or suggestions please let Steve Caruso know.
- Public Relations update (brochure and e-zine)
- The e-zine would take the place of the current electronic newsletter that the SHC produces. In order to get a larger mailing list each commissioner has been requested to come up with at least 5 email addresses. Students from Sacramento State have been working on this project and may present a rough draft of the e-zine at a future Executive Committee meeting. Everyone is welcome to come to the meeting. Steve will also send out the rough draft to commissioners.
- General Comments
- Program Associate Jake Salcone's last day with the SHC is June 30th. He will be going back to school full time. He said "Thank you" and that he has learned a lot working at the SHC. We will miss having you around Jake!
The next Sacramento Hunger Commission meeting is July 19, 2005.
