Sacramento Hunger Commission: March 2005 Minutes
- Meeting called to order by Steve Caruso, Chair.
- No quorum to approve minutes, but minutes were reviewed and no comments were made.
- Brief reports/announcements/news:
Rebecca - Friends of Meals on Wheels has started a monthly newsletter, which she passed out; e-mail her if you have comments, suggestions, or articles.
Marijke Tuesday, March 15th kick-off meeting for 2005 Crop Walk Annual Crop Walks raise awareness of global hunger and raise money for international and local efforts. Last year $40,000 was raised; two local agencies received about $2000 each and Sr. Gleaners received $6000. The Hunger Commission expressed interest in possibly co-sponsoring the Crop Walk; co-sponsors help organize the event and recruit walkers. This year's Crop Walk will be October 16th.
Bill - Bill attended a successful Empty Bowl fundraiser today; River City Com. Services organized the event; 400 + tickets were sold.
Bill is flying to NYC for Volvo Volunteer award next week, and then to D.C. the following week for the American Community Garden Association meeting.
Richard - New DHA computer CalWIN system is getting started now. Working out gliches.
- 2005 Hunger Commission Priorities
Cindy - Strategic Planning in 2004 showed us the need for organizational development to build the capacity of the Hunger Commission; we narrowed our work down to three main priorities: Hope Awards, Food Charter, Hunger Hits Home Reports and Conference. We need to realize the limited capacity of the Hunger Commission and focus our efforts.
Steve - Need to look at all priorities through the vision (cathedral), and mission (catalyst)
These three priorities will legitimize the Commission as an 'expert' on food security.
Dawn - The Hunger Hits Home Planning Conference was a great conference, but what now? When do we get to follow up?
Cindy - Not sure, but a committee should be put together, making sure to include Juan's input.
- Reports and Discussion Four Working Groups
Programs and Planning Cindy distributed notes from their first meeting on March 3.
- Programs & Planning is fleshing out the idea for a mapping project to locate all food resources. First step is to collect all info currently available.
- Reports are important (map will help drive what to report on); to find ways to measure food security we may need to form a food-security indicators sub-committee.
- Executive Committee was recently educated about how VISTAs work for the Hunger Commission and is excited about hiring VISTAs for the mapping project and a VISTA to help Bill and the Sacramento Area Community Garden Coalition exclusively.
Alliances Low attendance at the first meeting, but good feedback. Set priorities for 2005 alliances.
- Friends of Hunger Commission will be our 'star-power' advisory board. Danielle will draft a letter to draw in 'Friends'; we will be able to use their names, they will provide advice and support and attend the Hope Awards.
- Danielle would like suggestions for whom to focus on for alliances/Friends, particularly within the Health and Education fields.
Public Relations Committee includes 4 Sac State Students (seniors)
- Students to create new brochure/marketing piece that captures the 4 pillars, and a tri-weekly e-zine. This will pressure the Commission to relook at our website.
- Need a big Sac Bee article new journalist (Jocelyn Weiner) focuses on poverty
- Office of Community Collaboration a great resource to help non-profits, especially with interns, service learning contact Sheila Macias
Fund Development Juan Yniguez not present, no report
- Hope Awards Discussion
Introduction - Hope Awards is the culmination of the Hunger Commission; we should be showing off and the event should be classy; it should also recognize individuals for their efforts.
Location - Interfaith Service Bureau might be able to secure a nice, affordable place. Location suggestions include: Towe Auto Museum, Library Galleria, Delta King, First Covenant Church, Sierra Health Foundation, Arden Hills Tennis and Swim Club. It was suggested that we find space large enough for 300 to 400 people.
Event - There were a number of comments about the focus of the event, and a possible name change. Many Commissioners support a change in the name of the event, such as simply "The Hunger Commission Awards." Should there be a raffle, auction, both, or neither? It was suggested that last year both took some of the focus away from the awards, so we should perhaps concentrate on the awards even if it means we won’t make any money. It was also suggested that all Commissioners must attend or at least be expected to buy a ticket.
Date - After some discussion November 7 was proposed, with the possibility of changing to Nov. 6 or 8, or even the following week. A second Hunger Hits Home Conference can be put on in October, ideally the same week as Crop Walk (10/16). Marijke offered to help promote both events.
Price - Steve advocated keeping it around $25. The Lions Club may donate the proceeds of an open bar.
Committee - Danielle volunteered to chair the 2005 Hope Awards Committee; Franklin and Richard volunteered to help Danielle. Most details will initially be dealt with by the committee.
- The next regular meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 17th at 11:30 at SETA Head Start, 925 Del Paso Blvd.
