Sacramento Hunger Commission: November 2004 Minutes

  1. Meeting called to order by Richard Schroeder, Chair.
  2. No quorum present at the beginning of the meeting to approve the September and October minutes, minutes approved at the end of the meeting. October minutes approved with a minor change.
  3. Commissioner, staff, visitor brief reports/announcements/ideas:

Rebecca Fuller, DHA: Senior Nutrition Services is taking over the South County routes for home delivered meals. A new project is starting to feed clients' pets. They need donations of gallon size Ziploc bags and cat food.

Jake Salcone is starting as the Program Associate to the Hunger Commission beginning November 22nd. Congratulations Jake! He will be at the Hunger Commission for at least another six months.

Thanks to Danielle, who, despite being robbed, did a great job with the raffle at the Hope Awards. Danielle has also created a form to record monthly volunteer hours; fill it out and send it to Peggy.

    Steve Caruso:

    • Kids Can Drive wrapped up last Friday; one school alone donated 41,000 cans!
    • Friday, December 17 is the Elk Grove Community Food Bank Services Christmas Basket giveaway. The basket has all of the necessary ingredients to have a nice Christmas dinner. They will serve around 600 people that day.
    • Hoops for the Hungry is scheduled for Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Bill Maynard: Hundreds of volunteers showed up on National Make a Difference Day. They worked on a variety of jobs around Sacramento, including at several school/community gardens. Richard said the day was a great success at the garden at Mather, despite the rain.

Peggy Roark: No progress to report with the Food Charter at the Board. Currently the Charter is being re-circulated by Don Notolli's office to all of the County Supervisors' Chiefs of Staff. Hunger Commission representatives will meet with the Chiefs of Staff in January as the next step. -Women's Wisdom Project (Sac. Food Bank) now has artistic note cards available with food themes.

Richard Schroeder: The Pots and Pans drive was able to serve 42 families last month! If you know of any families or individuals in need of kitchenware, please let Richard know at (916) 228-3161. The project is still in need of silverware. The Fire Dept. has been referring fire victims to Mather.

  4. Hope Awards

Gary Little presented HOPE Awards to Deric Rothe and Erin Gallup-Main of the Auburn Journal and to Cora P. Sy, who had been unable to attend the Hope Awards dinner. They each spoke about their work, followed by a brief discussion re the 2004 HOPE Awards event.

    • Please visit www.auburnjournal.com for information about what the Auburn Journal is doing to help with the hunger issues in Placer County.
    • Cora Sy is eager to help the Hunger Commission to the best of her ability. She emphasized that "You don't have to be a Board (or Commission) member to help your community."
  5. Update on strategic planning (Steve Caruso, Cindy Nelson)

A handout was provided which included what has been done to date and next steps. The group has met 4 times with Michael Perri from Lincoln Crow. He has proposed 5 goals, including one to strengthen the identity of the Hunger Commission as an expert on food security issues and expand our influence with decision makers. The committee will meet again soon to form a steering committee to develop a proposal for a 2005 action plan. It was also emphasized that we need to give new policymakers at the City, County, and state level information about the Commission and local hunger issues.

  6. Hunger Commission 2005 Nominating Committee report (Cindy Nelson)

Current Commissioners were asked to let Peggy know if they were interested in being on the Hunger Commission again by Friday December 3rd. The application is also available on our website, www.targethunger.com, with a Dec. 6th deadline for new applicants. The Hunger Commission is looking for people who can build relationships, have a clear vision, are experts in some aspect of hunger or community food security, and/or are knowledgeable about their community.

  7. Community Action Board (SETA) meeting report (Nina Nelson, Franklin Anderson)
    • CAB had their second meeting of the year. The currently-funded 20 programs are going to be renewed for another year; $1.5 million will be spent. The group asked for a copy of the Food Charter and essentially said "Food Security sounds unrealistic, but interesting."
  8. Some thoughts on Thanksgiving and the 2004 Hunger Commission
    • California has an impressive culture where there is an "anything is possible attitude."
    • The HOPE Awards event was impressive and moving. Without the HOPE Awards it would be very hard to know all the things that local people are doing to end hunger.
    • There have been many accomplishments this year (release of Hunger Hits Home report and the Planning Conference; Sacramento Food Charter, Hope Awards as an evening event for the first time). The Hunger Commission is taking the first steps of a 100-mile marathon.
  9. Decision on December 21st meeting, holiday celebration?

The holiday celebration will be held at Nina Nelson's house on December 8th or the 15th. The event will be from 5 pm to 7:30 pm. The December 21st regular meeting will be cancelled.

The 2005 Hunger Commission retreat will probably be held on January 18th 2005.
