Sacramento Hunger Commission: October 2004 Minutes

  1. Meeting called to order by Richard Schroeder.
  2. No quorum present at the beginning of the meeting to approve the September minutes.
  3. Brief reports/announcements/news:

Bill Maynard- National Make a Difference Day is this Saturday, October 23.

    • Almost 400 volunteers will be working on Community and School Gardens, and with Soil Born Farm, including a lot of Americorps volunteers

Janet Talsky- County WIC will be turning over the Stone Soup Community Gardens to the Health Education Council.

    • Gardens will continue without interruption; transition will take place at the end of October.

Cindy Nelson- 4th Strategic Planning meeting is on November 3, at CSPC @ 6pm. All invited.

Steve Caruso- Elk Grove City Council set to officially approve the Community Garden.

    • Will now have access to the land and eventually start planting.
    • The second annual Harvest for Hunger fundraiser was September 25th , very successful. Received $20,000! All invited next year.

Peggy Roark- CSPC wants to put a value on volunteer support and involvement

    • Will need the number of hours that commissioners have volunteered for the commission. Please count all the way from July 1st, 2004. Starting in October, Peggy will need the number of volunteer hours monthly. It was suggested that a form that could be filled out electronically would make it more likely that people would respond.

Richard Schroeder, Pots and Pans drive - 3 hallways at Mather full of Pots and Pans/other kitchenware. He will be or already has donated them to the Fire Dept., DHA, Head Start families and refugee Hmong families Salvation Army will apparently now be able to again provide some storage space.

  4. Report on Hunger Hits Home: Sacramento's First Planning Conference for Long-Term Community Solutions (Juan Yniguez)
    • It was a very good Planning Conference. About 65-70 people participated. Great speeches by Cindy and Steve; Peggy did a great job tying it all together; Sac Bee gave good coverage.
    • About 30 people went on the bus tour, and it was outstanding; taught attendees a lot.
    • Supervisor Nottoli and Councilmember Tretheway showed up for lunch; both were very pleased with how conference turned out.
    • Next steps are to send Thank You notes. Also need to review the conference evaluations at the next Hunger Commission meeting.
      • First time Anti-Hunger, Sustainable Ag., and Nutrition folks discussing hunger together.
      • Gail Gronert, a California Assembly staff person, was not able to attend the conference but is interested in meeting with us; it was also suggested that we try to meet with Assemblymember Richard Alarcon
  5. Update on Hope Awards, Oct. 21 (Richard Schroeder)
    • Reservations received for over 200 people
    • Please be there at 1pm to help set up. Also please stay after the event, as we are responsible for cleaning up.
    • Need leaves turning color for decorations - preferably real leaves on a branch.
  6. Hunger Commission 2005/ideas for potential members
    • Franklin Anderson, Danielle Blacet, Steve Caruso, Cindy Nelson, Richard Schroeder and Judie Wilson volunteered to be a Nominating Committee help select new Commissioners.
    • Peggy will send out the application form for 2004 electronically to the Nominating Committee so they can think about changes/additions. The committee should meet by early November to finalize the application and discuss whom we want to solicit applications from. Deadline for applications will be in early December.
    • It was suggested that the Commission needs a combination of ‘rain makers’, leaders, doers, and experts.
    • Commissioners who wish to remain on the Commission in 2005 please notify Peggy in writing; applications are optional for current Commissioners.
  7. Public Policy- national and state-level updates
    • The drug-felon bill AB 1796 was signed.. Now persons accused of using but not selling can be considered for Food Stamps starting January 1st, 2005.
    • The Governor has said he wants to ‘do something more comprehensive about hunger and obesity.’
    • Hunger Action Day is Tuesday May 17th, 2005; need lots of people.
  8. The future of Hunger 101
    • Franklin Anderson and Juan Valdez spent time this summer updating Hunger 101. However it is still being facilitated with only a limited number of people.
    • Some other ideas re Hunger 101:
      • Develop a video showing Hunger 101 in action.
      • Perhaps show the 60 Minutes video on hunger before doing the exercise.
      • The participants should have to undergo some type of slight physical discomfort so that they will feel uncomfortable in some way. Possibly a pebble in their shoes, or a tight rubber band around their wrist.
      • It would be good to offer it as part of the orientation for new staff working with seniors or people applying for federal assistance programs (DHA and elsewhere). Facilitating more Hunger 101 sessions in colleges (i.e. Social Work and Nutrition Science departments) would also be great.
      • Could be facilitated with local and state policymakers
    • Everything needs to be thought about through the lens of the new mission statement.
    • Need a Hunger Commission “Hunger 101 Committee”

The next Hunger Commission meeting will be held on November 16th, 2004, at SETA Head Start.
