Bond takes over helm of Sacramento Hunger Commission
By Judie Wilson
Kevin
Bond, director of Social Services for The Salvation Army in Sacramento,
has taken over the helm of the Sacramento Hunger Commission after former
Chairperson Rebecca Fuller announced a conflict of interest due to a new
job would not allow her to remain in the presidency position. Fuller was
serving her second term as Chairperson and Bond was in his second term
as Vice Chair.
Bond supervises The Salvation Army Shelter Programs in the Sacramento
area. These include Family Services, the Emergency Disaster Response Team
and he participates in the supervision of holiday programs that include
Coats For Kids, Adopt-A-Family, and the Christmas Food and Toy Distribution
program.
"I am involved with many community boards and councils in this role,"
says Bond, who has served nearly three years on the Hunger Commission.
Bond was born an identical twin in Oroville, California but grew up in
Davenport, Iowa and then Salt Lake City, Utah. "My dad was an educator
and he was often transferred," explains Bond. There are five brothers
and two sisters in the Bond family. Unfortunately, his twin brother, Kris,
who was his mirror image down to the opposite cowlicks in their hair and
a southpaw to Kevin's right-handedness, is now deceased.
Bond, a single father, whose three children Matthew, 19, Hannah, 13, and
Christopher, 7, live in Salt Lake, loves bike riding on the river trails,
jazz concerts and reading. "But not all at once," he says with
his characteristic grin. Known for his good humor, he says he also enjoys
philosophy, comparative religions, and writing poetry. The former sprinter
and distance runner says he would much rather be courtside or on the sidelines
at sporting events rather than watch them on television. He also admits
to a weakness for sushi and Baskin & Robbins Pralines and Cream. He
has several books he has started writing and two that he is currently
in the process of illustrating. "I want to build a little studio
that will be my art workshop. I like doing 3-D art as well as sketching
on canvas," he admitted.
Bond brings a wealth of knowledge and training to his position on the
Hunger Commission. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from
the University of Utah. He also holds certificates in Criminology and
is currently a candidate for a certificate in Addiction Counseling from
the University of Utah. He was a member of the National Association of
Alcohol and Drug Addiction Counselors and a former Board member of the
Utah Association of Alcohol and Drugs Addictions Counselors. In addition
to his service on the Hunger Commission, Bond has also served the community
as a Planning Team Member of the National Low Income Energy Consortium
2003, and as a committee member for the Homeless Healthcare Advisory Committee
and the Sacramento City and County Board on Homelessness. He has also
had training in Mediation from CSUS College of Health and Human Services
and Child Sexual Abuse Investigation Training for the State of Utah Department
of Human Services.
Of his new position he says, "I hope to see the Hunger Commission
continue to move forward strongly advocating for the hungry in the Sacramento
region. Along with advocacy, we will continue with our other two goals
of education and coordination. The reality of the hunger needs remain
the same although philosophical and financial support changes radically.
Fickle social pressures of politics and unstable finances have caused
serious concerns for local social programs. As ever, we on the Hunger
Commission, maintain that it is inconceivable than in our wealthy modern
society there are many that still face hunger. In a just society, it is
unpardonable that our neighbors face food insecurity on a daily basis
and we continue to do what we can to eradicate it now."
