2003 Accomplishments
EDUCATE
Public education about hunger and community food security
- "Hunger Hits Home 2003" in Sacramento County researched
and written; includes sections on community food security, information
from 338 surveys at soup kitchens and food closets, and seven major
federal food assistance programs.
- Hunger Commission's comprehensive web site, www.targethunger.com,
finally up and running in mid 2003, well-received despite the lack of
a public relations effort to publicize it
- Hope Awards 2003 Luncheon filled the KVIE space to capacity (almost
200 people), and included the Mayor for the first time with other local
and state policymakers in giving out two Golden Achievement awards and
seven awards to other winners for outstanding efforts to end hunger
- Hunger 101 used with 13 groups (a total of 237 people)-everyone from
a class of 4th graders at Howe Elementary, to the Americorps*NCCC members
at the Sacramento Food Bank, to the members of the Placer County Hunger
Committee.
Nutrition Education - opportunities for community members to learn about
healthy eating on a limited budget
- Progress made on diversifying and sustaining nutrition education (piloted
adapted curriculum for SRO residents, two classes for staff of organizations
serving vulnerable clients, completed draft of web-based nutrition education
workshops)
Outreach to inform residents of specific programs, services, and opportunities
- Food stamp outreach to seniors; participation of residents 60 and
over in the FS program increased by 20% from 3/02 to 3/03; shared materials
from the project with state-level staff and with the California Association
of Food Banks Advocacy and Education Project participants
- Put out last four issues of the bilingual North Sacramento/Del Paso
Heights Community Food Newsletter, and found a new home for community
food security-related information in the pages of the area's free community
newspaper, the North Sacramento Union
- Completed flyers with local information on food resources for 19 areas
in Sacramento County for the Neighborhood-Based Outreach Project, began
distribution
- Summer Food -- worked with the City of Sacramento to increase the
number of volunteers and publicity for the program
ADVOCATE
- A Sacramento Food Charter is close to a reality as a City Council
resolution; Commissioners and staff visited all 8 City Councilmembers
Sept-Dec. 2003 to introduce Hunger Hits Home and the idea of a Food
Charter
- Principal focus of local advocacy was to support Senior Nutrition
Service and WIC during county budget hearings
- Principal focus of state-level advocacy was to support Darrell Steinberg's
successful Food Stamp improvement bill AB 231, Hunger Action Day, and
more recently, EBT and Farmers' Markets (member of new state-level advisory
group)
COORDINATE
- Set up two major projects that will be implemented in 2004: an edible
landscaping project with Mercy Housing and a community food assessment
with the "Weed and Seed" neighborhood of Glen Elder and Avondale
