School BreakfastProgram InformationIn 1994, the Hunger Commission and a local television station created a comprehensive outreach campaign in partnership with schools, the community and families called "Tune Into Breakfast". The campaign created free educational materials, including an activity book with classroom-ready activities for kids, that teach the importance of breakfast and good nutrition that were made available to teachers and administrators. The local TV station then reinforced the breakfast messages learned at school through compatible programming on several local children's shows and through station editorials and public service announcements. A popular children's show host (Chris Eddy) was the official spokesperson for the campaign. By 1997, Sacramento County had increased the number of School Breakfast programs available in schools by 83% and raised the average daily participation in School Breakfast programs by 63%. The "Tune Into Breakfast Campaign" won a CAPPIE gold award in 1995 from the Sacramento Public Relations Association and a Silver Award from the Sacramento Advertising Club for "excellence in creative, effective advertising".
