Community Food Security is obtained when every resident has access to a strong and sustainable food system that uses local and regional resources to provide nutritious and affordable food. In 1999-2000, the Hunger Commission conducted a food access study in two low-income neighborhoods in Sacramento County and wrote a report entitled Breaking Barriers: A Road To Improved Food Access outlining recommendations made by low-income residents about how to improve food access in their community. In response, the Hunger Commission received funding from the California Nutrition Network of the Department of Health Services to implement some of the recommendations. The Commission currently uses Americorps*VISTA volunteers to offer Nutrition Education workshops in Sacramento County.
