Hunger Hits Home 2003

Assemblymember Darrell Steinberg speaks at the press conference announcing the release of Hunger Hits Home 2003.In 2003 the Sacramento Hunger Commission completed a comprehensive report on food security in Sacramento County, "Hunger Hits Home 2003". This study included a survey of 338 residents receiving emergency food assistance at soup kitchens or food closets, as well as an analysis of seven major federal food assistance programs and other factors related to community food security. It has been eleven years since the Sacramento Hunger Commission updated the original 1989 "Hunger Hits Home." Despite its title, the 2003 study does not look only at "hunger", but also at the broader and more complex issue of community food security. Even with narrowly defined "hunger" issues, it has been difficult to compare 1989 and 1992 with the present situation, although we have done so wherever possible.
