ConclusionReal barriers to food access do exist in Del Paso Heights and North Sacramento forcing residents to expend more time, energy, and money on food than higher income communities. The lack of a local affordable major supermarket; neighborhood stores that can only supply a smaller selection of items often at higher prices; a small supply of quality affordable produce; coupled with high transportation costs does in fact force residents to spend much of their budget on getting to and from adequate food sources and ultimately less money for actual food. These food access barriers also have a negative impact on the local economy by decreasing the amount of business within the community and reducing the amount of food dollars residents spend there. Improved local food access, focusing on decreasing each of these barriers, would revitalize Del Paso Heights and North Sacramento and sustain a food secure community.
