The following are the recommendations suggested by the residents of Del Paso Heights and North Sacramento (continued)

Long Range Recommendations:

  • Establish a Competitively Priced Supermarket in a Convenient Location
    • Begin working with developers to place a large chain grocery store in the area. In No Place to Shop: Challenges and Opportunities Facing the Development of Supermarkets in Urban America, Zy Weinberg writes that this strategy could be successful with the collaboration of a "community development group with experience in neighborhood revitalization and/or commercial enterprises, teamed with a food retailer, one or more financial institutions, real estate interests, and local government entities."
  • Improve public transportation to markets that supply quality affordable food
    • Continue to support the implementation of the Del Paso Heights Community Shuttle Project and follow up on outreach to ensure that it is reaching useful food sources, improving food access.
    • Research the possibility of a "food shuttle" which picks people up directly from their residence and takes them to the grocery store or Farmers' Market and home again.
    • Establish effective communication between residents and the Regional Transit System (RT) so that RT can hear customer concerns and have the opportunity to remedy customer service issues.
    • Encourage local grocers to implement home delivery services within the community to public housing units, senior complexes, and other heavily populated locations.
  • Establish a Farmer's market in North Sacramento Area.
    • Work with the Certified Farmer's Market to pursue the economic feasibility of a North Sacramento Farmer's Market.
    • Work with neighborhood associations to schedule carpools to and from current Farmer's Markets
  • Organize a residential buying club where residents can buy food in bulk through wholesalers.
