The following are the recommendations suggested by the residents of Del Paso Heights and North Sacramento

Short Range Recommendations

  • Circulate a monthly/quarterly food information newsletter throughout the community sharing information about Farmers' Markets in the area, outreach of federal food programs such as Summer Food, Food Stamps, and WIC, shopping deals possibly through a supermarket comparison, SHARE, and food and nutrition information specifically to the area.
  • Increase Food Buying Power within North Sacramento and Del Paso Heights by:
    • Working with the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) to establish some innovative education materials to provide nutrition education and financial awareness workshops.
    • Increasing outreach to all individual and families who are eligible for food stamps and/or the Women, Infants, and Children programs and Summer Lunch.
  • Improve Food Access Utilizing Current Food Resources.
    • Work with neighborhood associations and storeowners to create a line of communication where residents and storeowners can express their concerns of current conditions.
    • Through a collaborative effort between storeowners and community residents provide technical assistance to improve store conditions such as safety and food quality in local stores and encourage community patronage of improved stores.
    • Work with local police to improve the safety of customers and provide storeowners an extra measure of security against theft and vandalism.
    • Work with storeowners to help send good nutrition and budgeting messages, while improving rapport through posters, brochures, videos, recipes, shelf tags and labels placed inside the stores.
    • Assist local stores in pursuing cost effective purchasing strategies, such as food buying cooperatives to supply quality, affordable food. Increase advertising and outreach of those stores that make improvements.
    • Increase outreach and promotion and provide technical assistance, to improve participation in the five community gardens within the two communities.
